First day of Notting Hill Carnival sees 95 people arrested

Five revellers were detained for possessing, while 35 others were accused of drug-related crimes. Ten arrests ov offensive weaponser common assaults had also been made by 9pm last night.
Despite the miserable weather in west London, with the rain expected to get heavier throughout today, some 7,000 officers will be on patrol for the final day of the annual event.
Chief Supt Robyn Williams said: ‘Carnival very much presents us with two extremes: those who want to enjoy the sound systems, cuisine and have a good time; and those who use it as an opportunity to commit crime.’
The police, as well as business owners in the area, have taken preventative measures to try and cut crime, as well as damage to property. A squad of specially-trained ‘super-recognisers’ have been tasked with spotting people and groups who have been banned from the event.
